See what I did there? Well, it’s been announced. The new companion on Doctor Who is Jenna-Louise Coleman. Who’s that? I didn’t know either. She’s known for the UK soap Emmerdale and will be on the new Titanic mini-series by Julian Fellowes (creator of Downton Abbey) airing this week in the UK and next month in the US. It’s being reported all over now but here’s a link to the BBC America article.
If you didn’t know, current companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) is set to leave next season. No word on if they are killing her character off or not. It’s been argued that a lot of the success of the current series is due Gillan and Matt Smith’s chemistry. Good pal Jon Hoche brought up the point in the most recent recording of my podcast, COMIC NEWS INSIDER 391, that he didn’t think Smith would have been embraced as much without Gillan by his side. While I love Smith (Tennant was my boy…his too), I partially agree. I think did fine on his own in the few episodes when Amy and Rory (Arthur Darville) weren’t present but I’m curious to see this new dynamic play out with Coleman. I’m open to change and hope she rocks it. She sure is easy on the eyes to start.
There will be 6 Doctor Who episodes this year, including the Christmas Special. Then 8 next year. Jenna’s character will first be seen at Christmas.
Steven Moffat says “Amy & Rory will leave in a final encounter with the Weeping Angels in episode 5. Not everyone gets out alive & I mean it this time”. UH-OH!
Alas, I will fiercely miss my Amy Pond though. Feel free to come see me any time, Karen. You know where to find me.
