I saw the UK singer Paloma Faith at Joe's Pub on Tuesday. She was fantastic! If you aren't familiar with her music, check out her latest hit, "Picking Up the Pieces".
Those pipes. Ridiculous. So awesome! As a big Anglophile, I have been familiar with her for a few years now. Besides amazing vocals, she is always so funny on the UK chat shows and BBC Radio interviews I've heard her on. Some highlights.
- Never been to Joe's Pub before. Nice intimate spot. We were up at the bar with good view of the stage except for the giant beam in the middle. Besides that, very cool. Note to self: Don't wait til last minute to get tickets and actually get better seats next time.
- She had a stripped down version of her show as the venue was tiny but she still rocked it!
- She mentioned how her single (as seen above) is available now and the album would be soon. And joked that hopefully her label wont team her up with Akon to try to get a hit.
- Again with the funny, she mentioned how she's "deeply hurt and upset" by today's music. And then went into a soulful rendition of an Etta James song.
- Most of her set featured songs on the somber side but she got a few dance-y type ones near the end. Even jumping, well, carefully climbing, onto the piano. Her dress was quite tight and she even joked that it's "not forgiving".
- She told a very funny story about how she likes to rebel at an airport by dipping her toe over the yellow line where she's not supposed to.
- Nothing to do with Paloma, but we got a bit of food and the deviled eggs were goddamn good!
- Only low part of the evening was when 4 people walked up and stood right in front of us 40 MINUTES INTO THE SHOW. I said something and they all moved save one girl who eventually did. Dicks. Another group came over shortly after and I loudly started going "NO NO NO" and they immediately moved. Come on people! Use your common sense and just be nice.
- She has a song called "New York" and dedicated it to the great city we live in. It's her love song to us!
- Overall, just amazing. While I don't think she'll catch on Adele-style, I do think she has the potential to reach a Florence and the Machine type success (still quite good, of course).
Go buy the album when it comes out. Her first album from 2009 (containing the "New York" song) is available for my fellow Yanks now. We'll have to wait a bit for the new album though you can get the first single (as seen in the video above) now.
