Saturday night is never a big TV night. However, there were a few things I recorded and watched. HBO's 2 part series, Elizabeth I, is the good. A finely crafted series that was well written, acted and directed. Helen Mirren as the Virgin Queen turns in a versatile performance. Many a great actress has taken on that role. Dame Judi Dench in Shakespeare in Love. The electrifying performance by Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth. This original HBO film follows the Queen in the middle of her 45 year reign. It focuses a bit more on her love life and the balance she maintained between that and her monarchy. Joining her is the always outstanding Jeremy Irons as the Earl of Leicester, her lover during these years. Part 2 will air Monday and deal with her later years and subsequent affair with a very young Earl of Essex. Both parts will continue to be repeated until we die.
Next up is the original SciFi Channel film, Mammoth. The bad. I only watched it because Summer Glau was in it. Remember her of Firefly and Serenity fame? And, of course, from me talking about when we hung out for a few days back at New Year's? I knew it was going to be a bit campy. But, it started off so bad. I couldn't watch it straight through. I had to fast forward through most of it. Only stopping when Summer would appear. And, honestly? I got the whole plot and idea of the movie by doing this. The CGI wooly mammoth was so ridiculous looking. Not realistic at all. Not even close. The only other thing that made me hit pause on the remote was this:
Leila Arcieri. This former beauty queen sizzles the screen as a special government agent. Now, if they would have made the movie about her own mammoths, then it would have been better. Of course, if they were wooly, then that would just be gross.
And, finally, the ugly. The weather last night. I went out briefly to the deli and got drenched! Glad I was still in the middle of watching Elizabeth I. Usually, my night ends with the ugly. I wake up and realize that Loosey is next to me. She's the neighborhood hooker with a heart of gold. And a face of Medusa. And a body of a crackhead. Oh yeah. She is a crackhead. Hey, there's that heart of gold though!
Final verdict. Check out Elizabeth I, avoid Mammoth, stay in from the rain and look out for Loosey!
The weather definitely sucked. It puddle-ate my this-book-should-not-be-out-for-another-week-and-a-half-book, and now the pages are all skanky and crinkly. Boooo, weather!
