Has anyone else noticed that Aquaman is everywhere lately? I have seen him mentioned on several shows. It's a little creepy. Is it a prerequisite to him taking over the world? He certainly looks pretty intimidating with his big ol' trident over there. Very Poseidon of you, Aquaman! It totally matches your outfit too. Though, what's with the orange and green motif? Is that the school colors for University of Atlantis? "And quarterback for the Atlantis Seahorses, #1, Aquaman!"
He first came to our attention looking like this. In the DC comics and eventually in the classic Superfriends cartoon. Kind of a panty waist. Ooooh....he can talk to fishes. If I could do that, I think I would say, "Hey, lobsters. Cover yourselves in butter and get in that pot of boiling water!" He lingered in this goofy outfit for years until the Powers That Be at DC Comics decided to upgrade him. And by upgrade, I mean make him a hippie. All cool with long hair and a beard. Like long hair makes you cool. Oh wait...I have long hair. Then it does make you cool!
Hippie Aquaman lasted quite a few years in the comics and even appeared in the new Justice League cartoon series. I guess he seemed more regal. My question: How does his hair stay so neat and shiny when he's always in salt water? Mine gets all knotty and sticky and gooky. Okay...that was a little gay. Anyway...
HE'S EVERYWHERE! He recently got some props on the TV show Smallville where he appeared as a young environmentalist from the University of Miami. (Ergo, the orange/green motif). This episode was so popular that a spin-off Aquaman series called Mercy Creek was green lit. A pilot was shot but it's not on the fall schedule. Though it may be a mid-season replacement. That got the ball rolling. Then, the HBO series Entourage had the main character playing Aquaman in the movie version. The fictional movie within the series became the highest grossing film to date! And then, to top it off....
I'm watching Superman Returns for the second time last week. Lois Lane's kid is in bed. His pajamas? Well done, Brainiac! You guessed it! He's wearing Aquaman pajamas.
Don't ignore these signs. The denizens of the deep will be rising. We surface dwellers, as they call us, need to be prepared. Aquaman's kingdom covers 3/4 of the earth. Be warned.
Aquaman is coming.
