That's right. I already saw it. Thursday at midnight. Minor spoilers ahead.
The much anticipated sequel hit theaters yesterday. I'm really curious to see the numbers on this one. While Superman Returns pulled in a good amount, people are saying that Pirates could surpass it. As much as I loved the former, I can certainly see the latter doing that.
Pirates finds Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in debt to the supernatural, underwater Davey Jones, Captain of The Flying Dutchman. Jack faces eternal servitude under Davey Jones unless he pays his debt. Of course, Jack's misadventures interrupt the nuptials of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) who inadvertently get caught up in Jack's crazy machinations.
I walked into the theater to many people dressed in pirate gear. Yeah. Oh boy. But, they were pretty good natured and kept yelling "Aaaaarrrgghhh!!!" before the movie started. I worried that they would keep it up during the movie, but quieted down as the lights dimmed.
This movie is a big pile of fun. Ridiculous and crazy and completely fun! Sea monsters, buried treasure, sword fights, ship fights, cannibals, rum, a voodoo priestess,a monkey and a midget all round out the good time. Depp returns in his Keith Richards inspired performance of Captain Jack Sparrow. Once again, so funny and oddball that it just works. Bloom as Will Turner serves the role of the hero and has stepped up his sword fighting skills and leadership. Give that man a bow and arrow! Did no one see his prolific and deadly artistry in The Lord of the Rings trilogy? Knightley is sufficiently succulent as Elizabeth Swann and gets to have a bit of sword playing fun herself. Great supporting cast of pirates and scalawags.
Mackenzie Crook as Ragetti and Lee Arenberg as Pintel were the hilarious duo constantly getting into or stirring up trouble. The eyeball popping made me pee my pants. As always, good thing I wear my Depends at all times. And a condom. And the patch. I don't smoke, it's just therapeutic.
Another great addition to the cast is Naomie Harris as Tia Dalma. A voodoo priestess of sorts who helps Capt. Jack and the crew out on a couple of occasions. Spooky and sexy at the same time. Just like I like 'em!
The special effects were quite good. I loved how Davey Jones over there always had a tentacle moving. And who knew he was The Phantom of the Opera too? You'll get it when you see it. I'm not gonna spoil too much!
Great twist at the end. A quick cameo. No, not telling. And, it's not who you think. They are about to start shooting the next one, so we don't have to wait too long for the sequel. Don't worry, it's not like the Matrix sequels. Where the 2nd one ended all stupid like.
Go see it. I might again. Yes, another 2 1/2 hour movie, but the fun just keeps rolling along. Remember to wear your eye patch, your bandana and bring a sword. You just might need it.
AAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
