Danity Kane

Danity Kane. Who might that be? An ex-girlfriend? My 1st grade teacher? A pet bird? NOPE! They are the group chosen during MTV's Making the Band competition over the past few years. This season followed the band as they went forth making their first album. Their official name was only revealed recently. Danity Kane. What the hell does that mean?

Well the official story on a recent episode was that one of the girls was drawing a little super hero doodle. A strong super chick. Supposedly, Diddy walks by and asks who that is and the girl says, "I call her Danity Kane." He says, "That's the band name!" Yeah, right. SURE that's how it happened.

Make fun all you want. Yes, I watched the show avidly. Hate on Diddy all you want, but he has an eye for talent. People forget he's the one who used to produce The Notorious B.I.G.

Yes, the girls are purty. VERY purty. Hotness! But, they can blow too. Pipes for days. In the CD cover over there from left to right is D. Woods, Shannon, Aubrey, Aundrea and Dawn. I'm not sure how far they'll go in the biz or how soon they'll break off into solo careers, but I'm digging them for now. Their first single, Show Stopper, Is bumping. Aubrey is the clear break out leader of the group. She was picked out of the group and shot for Maxim or one of those mags last year. D. Woods clearly seems to have aspirations to go solo. Shannon is married and this seems like just a temporary thing. Dawn can probably get some work on her own as well.

My favorite is Aundrea. She's petite and cute and can sang! Yes, sang! And did I mention petite and cute? You know how Daddy likes the little ones. And she little. Wee even!

I actually saw them piling into a limo a few weeks back coming out of Diddy's studio on 44th st. It's down the block from my bar. Aundrea and I locked eyes. Oh yeah. It's on.

The self titled album drops on 8/22. Go cop that. Yeah, I'm gonna. Hate away. But, you know it's like that old adage. You either want to be 'em, or do 'em. You know, just like what people say about me.

Bit-O-Honey

Remember this candy bar? It was always a fave of mine as a kid. I am mos def and chocolate freak. To get me to try something else besides chocolate was always a daunting task. So, when I started digging Bit-O-Honey, it was a big deal that I wasn't eating chocolate. In my old age, I prefer the dark chocolate over the milk. Like my man Tupac says, "The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice!" He must have really liked berries. To emphasize my chocolate-itis, here's a little flashback.

I was about 10 and was playing in the yard. My grandfather had one of those work trucks with a metal lift on the back. The lift was up and I ran right into the corner of it. Splitting my head open. (I still have a scar.) I was bleeding and crying profusely. My granny couldn't get me to calm down. Her and my mom tried everything. Then, granny whispered in my ear. "If you stop crying, I'll get you some chocolate." Yep. Tears stopped immediately. Behold! The power of chocolate!

Back to the Bit-O-Honey. What? I digress all of the time. You're not used to that by now? The only bit of honey I wanted to take a bite out of lately was Jessica Alba. Get it? She was in the movie, Honey? Playing a character called Honey? Anyone? I even provided the poster over there so you'd get it. Sheeeesh. What more do you want?!

Anyway, I recently found a local deli that had Bit-O-Honey. I bought about 5 bars. Some good stuff! My only complaint. In the many years they've been around, they still haven't made it easier to the candy off of that damn wax paper! Inevitably, there is always some waxiness on a few pieces. But, like a good crack addict, I'll keep coming back for more. Oh, how I'll come back for more.

Send money. Send Jessica Alba. But, definitely....send some Bit-O-Honey.

Actually, for all of the main press kudos this show has received, it's not as well known as it should be. It's seriously one of the, if not THE, best written ensemble pieces out there. Season 3 starts this fall. Go download...uh..I mean purchase the first 2 seasons to catch up!

Day Off

I'm off today. And sometimes I just need to be off from everything. Though I am recording the podcast tonight. Where I'm heading to right now. Which means I got no time for you! That's right. Cry. Keep crying. Okay stop. Now cry again, bitches!

Kevin Smith-less

Kevin Smith is appearing at his store in Red Bank, New Jersey today at 2 p.m. According to the press, he is going to sign "ANYTHING and EVERYTHING from 2:00pm until the very last fanboy is satisfied." More info at his site. We all know what a rabid Smithist I am. Or Smithite. Smithian? Naturally, I'm going!

What's this? No one will cover my shift at work? CURSES! It's true. I can't go. This would be my best opportunity to get an interview with Kevin for my podcast, COMIC NEWS INSIDER. My plan was to wait in line with friends, approach him with mics in hand and just start talking. Or ask if I could interview as he's signing. Or set up another time to do it. Something! Alas, the Powers That Be seem to constantly thwart me when it comes to meeting Kevin. This year at Comic-Con, he was hours late to his panel and I had to bounce to do other interviews. Then, never checked back to see if he was coming later. Which he did. And now this!

Fret not though, dear readers and listeners of CNI. I have agents on the job. Secret agent Eileen is going to try to give him a note from me along with a copy of one of our postcards for the show. She's going to gush over how great the show is and what a fan I am and that he needs to do it or she'll cut him. Hmmmm....maybe that last part is a bit harsh. I'm sure she'll think of something. Good luck! And remember, if caught, bite down on your cyanide capsule. Hey, she signed up for the mission! She knows the consequences. Succeed or get kicked in her Pillow Pants.

The Tick Live!

As you may know, I was a big fan of The Tick cartoon. That, in turn, got me to collect all of the back issues of the comic book that it was based on. So, when a live action version of the series was announced back in 2001, I was excited! I remember catching the first episode and digging it. Then, for some reason or other, I missed the rest of the series. Of course, it aired on FOX. Notorious for not giving a series the chance to grow and find it's audience. It was cancelled after only 8 of 9 episodes aired. (You couldn't show one more episode? Sheeeesh!) However, it was released on DVD a couple of years back. I only recently picked up the DVD less than a year ago. And only just now watched it straight through. I know....slacking!

I wet myself. It's absurd and eccentric and stupidly fun! Patrick Warburton plays the role of "The Tick" so well, it really makes you want to see him do more of it. I loved the voice actor on the animated series and thought he voiced "The Tick" to perfection. Gotta say though, Warburton owns it as well! He's surrounded by a great supporting cast in David Burke as "Arthur", Liz Vassey "Captain Liberty" and a suprisingly funny Nestor Carbonell as "Batmanuel."

Go buy it. It's only 9 episodes. That's about 3 hours of your time. It's worth it.

From now on, when someone asks me, "You know what I'm saying?" or "You get my meaning?"....I'll snappily and quickly reply with a big fat, "NOPE!".

Like creator/producer Ben Edlund says, "You either get it or you don't." If you're cool like me, you'll get it. If not, you probably find Carrot Top and Dane Cook funny. Go watch reruns of According to Jim then, ya mooks!

Baltimore Un-Bound

I should be in Baltimore right now. Alas, I am not. What happened? Well, chillax and I'll tell you!

I was last minute planning to visit my newest of new friends, Melissa. She of the contingency of Browncoats from San Francisco that I met at Comic-Con. She was going to be in Baltimore for a couple of weeks. Of course, I waited until the last minute to start attempting to plan the jaunt to B'more. Bus is cheap. Long ass ride though. And, not really sure how close it is to where she is staying. And no car on her end. Hmmm....train is pricey and once again, how close? Plane....hahahahahahaha! Seriously? $500? I could fly to Namibia for cheaper. They musta been serving crack, giving lap dances and had the Cristal flowing on that flight. In retrospect, maybe I should have flown.

I reserved a car with my bud, Mike. He was gonna hang in D.C. with some friends. That or do a one man march on Washington. Or run for office. Or run from an officer while trying to do a one man march. Something like that.

Then, since I waited so long, we saw how much the car was gonna be. $5 gajillion dollars for a Pinto? That better have crack in it, lap dances and Cristal flowing! (Sensing a theme?) Plus, Mike and I realized just how far apart our destinations were and it was more than just me dropping him off. I'd have to take him to the airport, he'd catch a flight to Guam, take a boat back, hop off and swim to shore and then I'd pick him back up. Crazy, right?

And...I completely forgot about my friend Elyssa's going away party! She's leaving for New Zealand and will be gone a whole year. I still told people going to that party that I would be in Baltimore, so don't tell them. Oh crap. They might be reading this. STOP READING! I wanted my appearance at the party to be a surprise. Yes, I'm that narcissistic in believing that my appearance is a big deal. Have you met me?

Oh yeah. And I think I'm wanted in Baltimore. Some sort of bank robbery or something I was allegedly involved in. 15 times. Ya got nothin' on me, coppers!

Next time, I'll plan better. And by that, I mean I'll wait until the last minute again. Hey, love me for me. I ain't gonna change for you. Don't hate the playa, hate the game.

So, that's my sordid tale of my almost trip to B'more. Sorry about that, Mel! We'll do it up next time! Or just come out to the big bad city of New York.

Talladega Nights:The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Caught the midnight showing of Talladega Nights:The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. It officially opens today. Fret not, I shan't spoil it for you.

Go see it! It made me pee my pants profusely. That's why I always get the big cup of soda. Sweet relief!

Will Ferrell once again excels as a hapless idiot. The always reliable John C. Reilly as his best buddy, Cal, is great as well. Sascha Baron Cohen, he of Ali G. and Borat fame, rocks as Ricky's snooty French rival.  Nice supporting cast including Michael Clarke Duncan, Gary Cole, Jane Lynch, Greg Germann and Molly Shannon.

Oh yeah....the smoking hot Leslie Bibb. She first caught my eye in that clever and underrated dark comedy on TV years back called Popular. She was one of the popular girls! Funny stuff. Go buy the DVD's. I think it's only 2 seasons long. Something like that.

Anyway. Talladega Nights:The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is awesome and ridiculous fun. One of those that will be funnier each time you see it. Only there wasn't ever a ballad for Ricky Bobby in the movie as the title suggests. I'll just make one up now. And just because it's been in my head for awhile, it's to the tune of El Paso by Marty Robbins. (Look up an old post to help explain.) Here goes. Semi-Spoilers. But, not really. I'll keep it as vague as possible.

Why Aren't You Listening to the Joss Whedon Interview?

We interviewed Joss Freakin Whedon on Episode 48 of our podcast, COMIC NEWS INSIDER. Why aren't you listening to it?!

Maybe you're one of the few whom haven't heard of Joss. Where the hell have you been? He is the creator of such shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. And the subsequent movie version of Firefly called Serenity. He wrote and worked on other scripts,movies,shows,etc. However, the aforementioned shows are the ones that he is best known for and they have created a rabid fan base. Seriously, they froth at the mouth. I should know,I'm one of them. Excuse me, have to wipe the foam from my mouth.

Anyway, go listen to the show. He's awesome and gives tidbits on each project he's worked on or is working on. Well, cuz I asked him. Duh!

Great stuff going on in Civil War culminating with a not so surprising, yet spectacular appearance by Thor. 52 continues to be inconsistent with the lame PR driven lesbian Batwoman story. But, comes back with a great Black Adam and Isis story! Joe and I almost have our own civil war as we disagree on a few points in the series. And we realize we are the living embodiment of the 52 series. 52 weeks in a year. We do a weekly show. We're 52! It's a book about us!
