I only read the beginning of the post because I haven't seen it yet and don't want to be spoiled; however, I happen to think that even if a comic began as a series and is later collected in trade, if the series is short enough, and it was understood from inception that a series was only going to be 4 issues, or 12 issues (any longer than that and you're pushing it, I think), I think you can still consider said collection to be a "novel". I consider "Watchmen" to be a "novel" even though technically it is a collection. Same, "Elektra: Assassin" (which I don't even own in trade, just as issues). Lest we forget, most if not all of the great novels of Dickens, Twain, Austen, were originally released in monthly installments, too. :)
