I'm all for breaking the rules. But, there's a time when you just don't. Everyone cuts corners. But sometimes you just shouldn't. I ran into someone recently that reminded me of this. We worked together at some random bar years ago. I'll call the person "Chris" since it's ambiguous. Chris would always get mad if I followed the rules. Chris wanted me to break the rules. Not for myself. For Chris. Once, Chris asked me for a drink after the shift. My policy, "No tickee, no laundry". I don't give out liquor to co-workers unless approved by management. Chris said, "Oh, who cares. Just do it. It's not a big deal." I insisted that I wouldn't and Chris proceeded to get mad at me. For following the rules. Another time, management laid down a new rule about how to ring something in. Chris rang it in wrong and I explained the correct way. Once again, Chris says, "Oh, who cares. Just do it. It's not a big deal." Just trying to convince me that I shouldn't listen and let Chris do whatever Chris wants. Of course, Chris got mad at me. This is the type of shit that Chris wanted to plant a flag in and start the service industry revolution. Not harassment, unfair work practices, low wages, etc. This horse shit.
I used to get into it with Chris about stuff like that. We were friends and all. I would ask, "Please don't put me in a compromising position. We're friends, but I will not risk my job or even sully my work ethics just to help you out." Same answer. Chris didn't care. Amazing.
Chris and I hadn't seen each other in awhile. And, as I said, we were friends. We talked about getting together and grabbing a drink and catching up. Then I remembered all of the above.
Fuck that. When I'm ready to start a charity for petty causes, then I'll give Chris a ring. Of course, Chris will be a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy or marry Kyle Petty or take out petty cash or become a petty thief or go to Petticoat Junction or...or...or...change their name to Petty McPettikins from Pettyville.
I could go on, but I wont. That would just be...
