At around 5pm, just about everyone heard the news of Heath Ledger being found dead in a NYC apartment in SoHo. I've been scouring the internet for more news and watching different news channels. Most reports have the same thing. A masseuse arrived for a treatment to the apartment. He was then found unconscious by his housekeeper around 3:30pm. When they unsuccessfully revived him, they called 911. Now, I've heard 2 reports. That he was found dead. I also heard, that he was alive but in full cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived whom were unable to revive him. It's been ruled as a possible suicide as he was found with "pills strewn about him". Either way. Tragic indeed. I've always been a fan, though I've not seen all of his films. (No Brokeback for me.) I think A Knight's Tale is my favorite Ledger flick. Just really fun.
I've been chatting with folks for the past couple of hours about this and found a few different camps. Those, genuinely saddened. Others saying what a selfish asshole he is for taking his life. Even though reports have not confirmed a suicide. Here's my thoughts. Sure, it's looking like a suicide. And if that's the case, then yes...he is selfish since he has a 2 year old daughter. But, we don't know for sure. And I hardly think hours after him being found is the time to say, "What a fucking asshole" and stuff like that. Let them investigate and find it all out. For now, I mourn a young man in his prime who was finding his niche in the business as a good actor.
My other annoyance in this news, is the way the fucking media reports things. They gave out the FUCKING ADDRESS down to the apartment number! Local news has cameras down there and one reporter said what "a spectacle" the scene is becoming. And, they show some idiot girl on the news, smiling the whole time saying, "Well, my co-workers and I heard about it. And the office was all abuzz, so we decided to walk down here and see for ourselves!" Ridiculous. What an idiot! She said it in the same manner as if he was still alive and hanging at a Starbuck's.
Hey everyone! Let's go down to the site and try to see them taking out a dead body in a body bag! It's a celebrity after all!
Idiots.
Anyway, as a big nerd, I've been looking forward to his role as "The Joker" in the upcoming The Dark Knight flick. The reviews have been nothing but positive. Many of us have already thought that the movie will probably do big numbers due to his death. It would have any way, but now even more so. Sort of like when Brandon Lee died during filming of The Crow. Of course, I wish he was alive to see it do the big numbers it would have any way and am curious as to just how much bigger those numbers will be now.
Alas, for now. Just toasting to a fine but short career and hopes that his family finds some way to come to terms with this in time.
RIP Heath.
