Go Away Daddy

You all know about my podcast, Comic News Insider. The great domain name buying site, Go Daddy, is also our web host. Made famous by the hotness of Candace Michelle (pictured) in those Super Bowl ads from a few years back. For a minimal fee after purchasing name rights, you can use them as a host. Don't do it. They're great for domain name purchasing, but sucky for web hosting. From the very beginning, we've had issues. My co-host even called their tech support line to complain and was basically told (no joke) that "it is what it is" and nothing can be done.

I'm in the process of switching our website host over to here at TypePad. With a pro account, like I have, I can create as many blogs as I'd like. Which would explain the 69 sites I have dedicated to bourbon and strippers.

Stay tuned. With a little help from my friend, Kim, we should have it all transferred and ready within a week or so. You can still go to the same URL (www.comicnewsinsider.com), but it will start bouncing over to the new site. For now, it's still stuck in Go Daddy dungeon. Russell Crowe is My Nephew

My new nephew should be here in May. His name? Maximus. Sis and hubby still haven't picked out a middle name, so I'm going with Batman. And yes, rest assured. During delivery, I will be playing the Colosseum scene from Gladiator in a loop.

Oscar is 80!

Oscar the Grouch turned 80 last night! Happy Birthday!

Oh wait...this just in. Wrong Oscar. Ah...the Academy Awards. The Oscars. Got it. Moving on.

Another year where I've fallen behind on my movie watching. There used to be a time when I saw every movie out there. Literally. Even a lot of home movies. This year...not so much. The only big picture nominee that I saw was Juno. And I loved it. Anyway, some highlights:

• Jon Stewart was awesomely hilarious and kept the show flowing.
• Jessica Alba presenting an award or something. I really don't know. I was too busy staring.
• Javier Bardem winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in No Country For Old Men. During his speech he ended it all in Spanish as a tribute to his mom. My Spanish is rusty but I'm pretty sure he said something like, "Mama, fuck these whitey's! With this, I can get us into any restaurant now. And not through the back door!" And then he kept creepily kissing her on the lips.
• Tilda Swinton winning Best Supporting Actress and calling co-star George Clooney out on his old Batman costume "with the nipples" and how he always had it on.
• The 5 performances for the song nominations. It seemed like every song was from Enchanted. The lovely Kristin Chenoweth (whom we'll be interviewing very soon on Comic News Insider!) charmed the pants off the audience through her beautiful voice. As did the eventual winners, the quirky duo of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, with their song "Falling Slowly" from the movie they starred in called Once. Really dig that song.
• And...after they won, their acceptance speech. Hansard said his words and then Irglova got on and they immediately played her off! Then, after coming back from commercial, Jon Stewart graciously calls her back out to say her thanks as well. Class act, that Stewart.
• Marion Cotillard winning Best Actress for La Vie En Rose. K. I heard of this flick and how she was the front runner. But, damn. She is stunning. Absolutely striking. And she was so damn cute in her speech. She couldn't find the right words, but still came across great.
• Diablo Cody winning Best Screenplay for Juno. She's famously known as being a former exotic dancer. Okay, stripper. See?!! All those years of me getting lap dances finally paid off for someone!

I'm sure there was more, but I ain't got time to cover it all. Go look it up. I'm off to Hustler Club to find my next Oscar contender!

Kickin' Like Chan!

My sis showed up last night and suprised me! She and Bob were in town for the night celebrating the anniversary of their first date. Which I was there for as well. That's another story. I haven't seen her in 2 months when she was 5 months along in her pregnancy. Barely showing a little baby bump. Go on. Do the math. Yep, she's 7 months pregnant. And damn....SHE'S HUGE! That baby is gonna be a yeti.

She grabbed my hand to feel the baby kick. Took a few tries, but my little nephew-to-be gave me a Jackie Chan kick! He wasn't responding at first, so they told me to talk to him, as that usually got him to respond. I did. "What's up, dude?" Nothing. "Whatcha doing in there, pal?" Nothing. Finally, I pulled out my Ace in the hole.

"Bourbon and strippers".

KICK!

Yep. That's my nephew.

Tarantino Got Me Pregnant

I'm an avid Amazon shopper. No, I don't mean that I purchase Wonder Woman's sisters. I mean the online shopping site, Amazon.com. So, on occasion, they send me emails with suggestions of what they think I might like according to my purchasing habits. Actually, what their suggestion-bot thinks I might like according to my purchasing habits. I got this one recently.

"Dear Amazon.com Customer,
We've noticed that customers who have purchased or rated books by Quentin Tarantino have also purchased The Way I See It: A Man's Guide to Pregnancy by Robert Rodriguez."

Fucking Quentin. He said he'd always be there for me. Instead, he sends me a book. Bastard.

Nerd Stories

As you know, I am the co-host of a podcast called COMIC NEWS INSIDER covering the world of comic books, sci-fi, animation, pop culture, etc. I've often lamented over how the female population still isn't that into this world. It certainly has increased and improved over the years, but there's also still a negative stigma about it all. We have a segment called "Converting to Comicdom" where I give comics to a girl, have her read them, come on the show and review. (Successful conversion, Elyssa, in the pic!)

Recently, I have been in touch with an upcoming author, Carrie Tucker, who is writing a book for girls that will help them better understand the nerd/geek culture.

And she wants your stories! 

Carrie says, "I Love Geeks [an aside: I originally wanted to call it The Nerdy Handbook For Girls: A Primer, but my publisher kind of overrode me] is a guide for girls looking to explore stereotypically 'geeky' or 'nerdy' obsessions such as video games, comics, anime, and sci fi. The guide will break each one down to make them more user-friendly for girls whose only experience with Spider-man may be via Tobey Maguire.  I'm looking for stories to include in the book: stories from guys or girls who identify with being a nerd, stories from guys who wish their non-nerd girlfriend would be more understanding of their interests, and stories from girls who were introduced to their 'nerdy' interests via their significant other. The stories can be situational (so, this one time...) or general (yeah, I used to not understand why you'd want to go to conventions at all, but now I get it...). You can even contribute pointers for girls, if you like, on how to explore your interests or simply how to DEAL with them."

Diary of the Dead

That's my zombie diary! The end! Okay, fine. You got me. I saw George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead last night. As you know, I'm a huge zombie freak. Romero, of course, is the classic originator of the zombie flick. Night of the Living Dead started it all. Dawn of the Dead followed 10 years later. The recent Land of the Dead was a bit cheesy, but still had some entertaining moments. And that's what I'm gonna go with on this current flick.

Diary of the Dead is similar to The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield because of the handycam film making. Though, the camera work seems much steadier here. We follow a group of film students and their professor as they are shooting a horror movie of their own. Soon, zombie goodness happens and they find themselves on the run. The director of the movie within a movie insists on shooting everyone around them including any zombie attacks. As predictable, some don't survive the zombie attacks. The movie moves along in a slow to medium pace and has a few somewhat scary moments. And a pretty funny character of Amish descent is introduced late in the movie. That's all I'm saying about that one.

It didn't suck. It didn't rock. It was just sort of okay. IMDB has a sequel already listed which is pretty ambitious thinking. If you like zombies, go see it. If not, maybe Hannah Montana is better for you. Now, a Hannah Montana zombie flick would be the shit! Let's get it done, Romero!
