This drink up at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con is both clever and hilarious. First off, let me say what a big supporter of Boom! Studios that I am. We cover a lot of their books on my podcast, Comic News Insider, and have enjoyed many of them recently. (If you're not reading Irredeemable, then what's wrong with you?) Of course, Mark Waid is pretty awesome too! However, I have to call shenanigans on this whole drink up thing! For anyone who has been to San Diego Comic-Con, then you know the following. EVERYONE goes to the Hyatt to drink in the Lobby Bar. It's the spot to end up at every night. You can be standing next to some guy in a Batman outfit while Rosario Dawson is on the other side of you. Seriously. I've hung in that bar with many friends. Fans, listeners, comic creators and celeb types alike. See? EVERYONE.
According to the Boom! blog:
"This is an open invitation event. No RSVP needed. No tickets required. We’re BOOM! Studios — we don’t roll that way! For those not in the know, a “Drink Up” is just like a “Meet Up” but with people drinking. This will be a gathering of friends and fans, so make plans to stop by see what’s happening!"
But, hey. You can't begrudge the Boom! guys for taking advantage of the situation. I wonder if they recount it later by telling people about the huge masses who came just for their party.
Aw, I'm just funnin' on them. I'm sure several people stumble over near them and become part of the party. I know I'll be there at some point that night. And if I run into the Boom! folks, then sure...count me as part of your posse!
Or better yet, let me get in on the fun. I should start my own party there! Hey, Everyone: Meet me at the Hyatt bar for Jimmy Aquino's Drunken Debauchery Fest. Nightly. See you there, bitches!
Please consider skipping this event because it is located at the Manchester Grand Hyatt which is the subject of a boycott by major civil rights, travel planners, convention planners and unions for it’s financial support of Prop 8.

while i appreciate your opinion on this, you clearly didnt read my post all the way through. im making fun of the event!
anyway, this was a source of contention last year as well and it didnt stop anyone from going. i doubt it will this year either. unfortunately, no one thinks of the employees there who may not have supported Prop 8 who live off of tips.
anyway, not going to get into a debate on my own blog. not what it's here for! :)
