Here's a quickie little review for RED that I'll be using for next week's recording of Comic News Insider. It's a bit choppy as it's just my notes. Tune in to episode 301 next week to hear me and co-host Joe embellish a bit more. Some spoilers.
Using the comic by Warren Ellis/Cully Hamner as a loose outline, RED still comes out with a fun story about a group of old retired black op agents who come out of retirement to exact revenge on those out to cancel them. In the movie, RED stands for Retired Extremely Dangerous. Bruce Willis plays Frank Moses, the baddest of bad asses. He likes to call his pension office & flirt with the girl handling his case, Sarah Ross, as played fantastically by Mary Louise-Parker. After professional teams are sent to cancel him, he runs off to get the band back together. Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren. All bad asses in their own right. We find out that the current Vice President of the U.S. has put out the order to kill them as they are linked to an operation he headed back in the day. Lotsa shoot 'em up, bang bang. It's gratuitous and awesome! All are bad ass but Mirren comes across really cool. She needs to do more action stuff. Sarah grows attached to the group, especially Frank, as her life is unexciting. Karl Urban is the CIA agent in charge of hunting them down. He has respect for them, unlike some above him. Great fight between Urban and Willis. Leaves us with a set up for a sequel which could be likely if it does well.
Really thought it was a pile of fun! Go see it!
