I attended the SyFy Being Human panel/screening at the Paley Center last night. If you're not familiar with the show, it's based on the original BBC show of the same name. Basically, a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost try living together as normal humans. Sounds like a bad joke, but I've been a big fan of the UK version. Lotsa fan controversy when the US one was being made since the UK one is still airing (Season 3 just ended over there and is close to ending on BBC America over here). I've never been one of those who just blindly hate something before it happens like so many other viewers. That being said, I did question why they were doing it since the UK one is still airing.
I watched the first episode and really liked it. And it's gotten amped up since then. Finding it's feet already. There are a few similar plot points to the original but it's already veered into it's own show. And that's a good thing. The show stars Sam Witwer as vampire Aidan, Meaghan Rath as ghost Sally and Sam Huntington as werewolf Josh. Immediate comparisons to the actors on the UK version, of course. They are making the roles their own and doing a great job at it. It's about 9 or 10 episodes into it's 13 episode season 1.
At the Paley Center, the 3 leads appeared along with recurring co-star Sarah Allen who plays vampire Rebecca. I loves her lots! Also in attendance was Mark Stern, the President of Original Content for SyFy.
I was there as a guest of Jill Pantozzi (aka The Nerdy Bird) but not as registered press. Jill was there conducting interviews. For some reason, I've never registered with the Paley Center. As I waited for Jill to arrive, the stars started to come in. Funny moment when Sam Huntington and Meaghan Rath entered. They are stopped by the ticket taker woman who asks them for tickets. Without missing a beat, Sam says, "Tickets? I don't know. Do we have tickets for this?" All the while checking his pockets in a comedy manner. It was pretty funny! Since I wasn't there as press, I didn't feel like I could approach them to ask questions. But, I had my iPhone recorder so I was able to ask Meaghan a quick question. Of course, I took lots of pictures.
Once everyone was gathered inside, we got a few words from Mark Stern and then were treated to next Monday's episode. And boy, was it a powerful one. No spoilers but big things happen! Quite moving and funny at the same time. Really great performances all around. After the screening, the cast was brought up and the moderator started in with the questions. Some highlights:
- The cast feels like their monstrous sides are metaphors for real life problems like addiction.
- Mark Stern said he wasn't interested in the show until a staff member insisted he watch the UK version. (Which I thought was a bit close minded that he wouldn't check it out on his own accord).
- Sam Huntington said he and Sam Witwer have had long discussions about what would happen if a vampire bit a werewolf. Would they come back a ghost werewolf vampire mix?
- Witwer said he and producers worked out how many people his character Aidan must have killed over his long life. Around 15,000.
- Witwer said he was a big sci-fi dork. (He has great sci-fi pedigree having been "Crashdown" in Battlestar Galactica, "Doomsday" in Smallville, and "Starkiller" in the video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed).
- Witwer gets so into the logistics of things that he's always wanting to know why and how things happen with his character. He brought up the example of when the vampires are killed and are turned into dust. Where does the dust go? Why do the vampire body AND clothes turn to dust? Interesting points!
- Sarah Allen talked about her first day of shooting. She had to create her entire vampire history before doing the first scene. Challenging.
- Meaghan Rath does Mario Kart character impressions. And to our amusement, did many of them for us.
- Rath relayed a story of how she was in traffic one day and was behind a bus with their faces on it. Some jerks pulled up next to her and started whistling at her in a suggestive manner. She points at the bus, then her face and then drives off!
- Witwer said Alice Cooper approached him and said he loved the show.
- Huntington recently joined Twitter and loves it. But had a fan show up at a hotel once because of it.
- Huntington wants to be a judge of SyFy's Face Off.
- Witwer is a big fan of the original Star Trek series.
- Huntington relayed his discomfort with his numerous nude scenes due to werewolf transformations. One of them joked that it was because he was learning about the body. Witwer mimed that he was flipping through an anatomy book to learn but the hand motion looked like something else. Rath called him out on it and it became a huge suggestive masturbatory thing. Really funny moment! Huntington didn't help the matter by ending the conversation with innocently saying about the process, "It was hard". An uproar occurred and he protested, "NO! NO! I DIDN'T MEAN IT LIKE THAT!" Just hilarious!
The cast genuinely got a long and there was much camaraderie. They were cracking each other up (as well as us) the entire time. Always great to see a cast get along so well. You can often tell when some don't like each other but they all are great friends.
It all ended with a quick Q&A from the audience. And that was that! Really fun time. I got to sit in as Jill interviewed Witwer. She'll probably have those interviews up on her site and/or Newsarama at some time in the near future. So, check 'em out! Thanks again to Jill for getting me in as her guest! I'll be chatting about it a bit on next week's episode 323 of my podcast, COMIC NEWS INSIDER. Tune in!
