Quick Recent Movie Reviews

I saw some movies recently. I reviewed them on my podcast, COMIC NEWS INSIDER. Here are some quick versions of those reviews. Apparently, I use the word "fun" a lot when reviewing. Hey, it's fun to do it!

X-Men: First Class

Lotsa fun, cool action, hot mutant girls but just a teensy bit of racism. Magneto rocked it.

Super 8

Harkens back to the 80's adventure/fantastical type films like E.T., The Goonies, etc. If anything, a darker E.T. type film. Cast of kids were great as was the coach from Friday Night Lights. Fun stuff.

Green Lantern

Oh, it wasn't that bad. Not the greatest story, but amazing visuals and I had a fun time with it.

Brooke Shields Kissed Me!

I saw Brooke Shields again recently and it reminded me to share a story or two with you! I hope you had your name dropping basket ready to catch this one! :)

I first met Brooke Shields back in the day when I was working at the well known restaurant Serendipity 3. That place was famous for getting famous people to visit for the then 40 years it had been opened. Brooke would come in quite frequently either with friends or with her ex, Andre Agassi. She was always super sweet and remembered my name. There was a bit of an embarrassing moment with Andre and a candle once, but Brooke seemed to be on my side about it.

Years, later. She became a semi-regular at another spot where I was employed. No, she didn't remember me from the other place though claims she remembered the candle story. Maybe she did but she's just so durn sweet and was probably just saying it to make me feel good. Either way, she's just awesome.

One night (years ago), she was in with friends and we chatted for a minute. My birthday was the day before and a co-worker mentioned it to her. Without missing a beat, she leans over and plants one on my cheek and says "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

She may or may not remember me now, but I'll always have that kiss. And the rash I got from not washing my cheek for months. And my rare copy of her hit film Brenda Starr.

SpongeBob MushroomPants!

We all know our favorite sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, right? Good ol' SpongeBob SquarePants! Well, he's so popular that a group of scientists have named a new species of mushroom after him. From the BBC:

Spongiforma squarepantsii (SFSU)

"The fungus, named Spongiforma squarepantsii by the researchers at San Francisco State University (SFSU), was found during an expedition to the forests of Borneo.

S. squarepantsii is shaped like a sea sponge and, say its discoverers, has a fruity or musty smell.

The new mushroom is only one of two species that belong in the genus Spongiforma. The other one is found in central Thailand, but differs in its colour and odour."

You can tell it's reported from the BBC because of all of those extra letter "U's". Pretty cool and yet another big step for the spongey slacker. I wonder how Patrick feels about all of this? Maybe the scientists can name a new species of weed after him?

Happy Father's Day?

Me elevator
My sister said it well on her Facebook status. "Being raised by a single mom, Father's Day was often just another day in my house." Now, for those that don't know the story, my sister and I have the same father. He was pretty absent in both of our lives (moreso in hers). So, I've never really thought of this day as a big deal either. She does find some positivity in it by citing her husband and other brother Tony as great fathers. (I can attest!). She goes on to say, "They have shown me how wonderful fathers can (and should) be." Word.

I certainly have some friends who are great fathers. But, still...all I really get out of it is the letters and emails I receive anonymously each year that simply state:

"Dear Jimmy

My mommy says you're my daddy."

Well, I was pretty wild in the 90's and 00's. Stay tuned...

Comic News Insider: The Interview List

Me banner
I've been working on cataloging/alphabetizing ALL of the interviews that we've done on my podcast, COMIC NEWS INSIDER (CNI), since its inception in April 2005. Boy, do we have a lot! Tons of comic book folks, naturally. Lotsa TV/Film. A few theater, web, music and theater ones as well! I've split them up into various categories. Some people from TV/Film cross over into comics but I put them in for what they are most known for. And I tried to put a little something they are known for in parentheses. Of course, most are known for much more, but I just put down what they may have been working on at the time. Especially in the TV/Film category as many of those interviews were big round table press conferences covering that specific show or film. You get the idea!

Soon, I will put it up on it's own page on the CNI website with links to the exact episode so you can go hear your favorite cartoonist, actor, writer, producer, singer, web host, etc.

Seems obvious, but I'll explain anyway because that's how I do. Name of interviewee on left with episode number on the right. Word. Anyway, here's the rough breakdown.

Last of the Heroes Con interviews with the amazing Kelly-Sue DeConnick. Thanks to Iz McAuliffe who stays on to intro/outro the episode. Jimmy sat down with Kelly-Sue at Heroes Con and they got along so swimmingly that we decided to release it as a special episode! That, and it's about an hour long of great conversation. They talk about comics they got as kids, the origin of her signature, adapting English translated manga, acting/working in NYC, comic book theater, and of course...her comic book work like Osborn and upcoming Supergirl. Kelly-Sue mentions sending your comics to the troops via the website called Any SoldierShe breaks it down on  her own siteas well. Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love!

Reviews:  Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman #1, Fly #1, Mystery Men #1, Samurai's Blood #1

Even more Heroes Con love with interviews from Darwyn Cooke, Becky Cloonan and Scott Weinstein. Jimmy is joined by good friend Iz McAuliffe, a fine podcaster in her own right. It's a SUPERSIZED episode of GIGANTIC proportions (just over 2 hours) but really fun! They wax on about Doctor Who and stray off topic frequently. All comedy gold! News includes: DC releases all 52 titles for relaunch, Beasts of Burden heads to the big screen, Kevin Smith's new reality show, Mark Millar on his own, and Uncanny X-Men cancelled. Some great listener feedback from a loyal listener. As always, the Top 3 and more! Leave your iTunes comments! 5 stars and nothing but love!
