Jimmy Aquino Loves Criminal: The Last of the Innocent

Still catching up on comics as I'm wont to do near the end of the year. Criminal: The Last of the Innocent is the collected trade of the 4 issue mini-series from earlier this year. I picked up the first issue and for some reason or another, lost track of it and never got the rest. Finally got the trade and read it straight through. GODDAMMIT!!!! Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips do NOT fuck around when it comes to crime noir. They mix crime noir with an homage to Archie comics. Yes, crime noir and Archie. You heard me. And it's brilliant. Jimmy Aquino Loves Batman: The Black Mirror

Been a bit behind in some comic book reading and completely missed the Batman run leading up to the New 52. I heard good things and wanted to check it out. Plus, my pal Francesco Francavilla was doing art chores along with Jock. So, when the storyline was collected into the hardcover trade paperback Batman: The Black Mirror, I just had to pick it up. Written by Scott Snyder, this deals with Dick Grayson as Batman. As previously mentioned, Francavilla and Jock shared art duties. Both dynamic in their own right and both amazingly awesome. The story is so compelling and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Briefly, a Gordon (as in Commissioner and Barbara) returns to the fold and all sorts of trouble begins to brew. Throw in The Joker at one point and some other familiar characters and you get a haunting tale of extreme family dysfunction. I'll be mentioning/reviewing it on my podcast (COMIC NEWS INSIDER) next Tuesday night so tune in for more details! Comedy Shots!

I went to go see my pal Grace Helbig do her thing at the People's Improv Theater on Wednesday night. She's in a group called Borealis and they kick ass! If you live in NYC or are coming here, check out their schedule and go see them. I brought pals Jon Hoche and Kevin Conn along to the show. Grace's comedy partner and all around awesome lady, Michelle Vargas, was there as well and we got to catch up. She and Grace were both on my podcast COMIC NEWS INSIDER way back in January or February of this year. (That's when I first met them both). Since then, Grace has been on the podcast several times and I've been jonesing to get Michelle back on. I got to meet her assistant/friend Emily who was way cool. And I finally got to meet one of Grace's fellow improv group members Lorraine Cink who is just the cat's meow. And she's a proper nerd too! Proof below:

 

See? PROPER NERD! Anyway, after the show, we hung at the bar and drank. And drank. And did shots. And drank. It was super happy fun time! Pal David Monteith was in town from the UK and brought along his friend Shar. Scotty was along for the ride too! Proof below:

I was able to bribe a bunch of them with shots and they agreed to come record the podcast next Tuesday. Expect much drinking, debauchery and nerdy fun! It will be a supergroup of comedy nerds! Stay tuned...
