I still can't get over that I'm dealing with a Hurricane in NYC. As some of you know, I grew up in Jacksonville Beach, FL. We surfed during Hurricanes!
Since many of you have very sweetly checked in on me and my fellow New Yorkers, I thought I'd give you a quick update. I'm fine and safe!
NYC prepped for this and a lot of people thought it was hype. I being one of them. Unfortunately, I was wrong as some areas were hit really bad and power was caught off below 39th street in Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx. (New York City is 5 boroughs, which many still don't seem to realize). I was one of the lucky ones. I live in Washington Heights. Literally the highest point in Manhattan.
"Fifteen blocks from the northern end of Washington Heights, in its Hudson Heights neighborhood near Pinehurst Avenue and 183rd Street in Bennett Park, is a plaque marking Manhattan's highest natural elevation, 265 ft (80.8 m) above sea level, at what was the location of Fort Washington, the Revolutionary War camp of General George Washington and his troops, from whom Washington Heights takes its name."
I live 5 blocks from that park. I went out during the morning yesterday around 9:30am and everything was open. The diner, delis, local stores, McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts, etc. No one seemed panicked. After I got home, I made some food for later in case of power outage and finally passed out asleep around noon. (I didn't sleep at all the night before and had literally only slept 3-5 hours/night for a few weeks). I seemed to sleep through the worst of it. Woke up before 8pm ad checked in on the news. Lots of flooding in places, no power for thousands (last estimate was over 600,000), etc. Again, I'm lucky being in The Heights. Never lost power, cable or internet. Got plenty of food. Gas stoves. Liquor and water.
There were strong winds up here and I was worried of trees going down or flying debris hitting apartments but things are calming down now as of writing this post. Truly hope all are getting through this alright especially my good pals all over the city. Hang in there, NYC! And thanks to all who checked in.
