Thanks to fellow Asian Jennifer DeGuzman for turning me on to this video, Things Asians Hate, by comedian Eliot Chang. I'm now watching his other stand up bits and videos. Nothing I love better than watching hecklers get owned by a comedian! Go check out his YouTube channel. If you don't, then you're racist. :P

Back in September, I interviewed young director Emily Hagins for both my podcast COMIC NEWS INSIDER and Stated Magazine. The powers that be at Stated have now put it up for your viewing pleasure! Here's the intro:
Emily Hagins has three feature films under her belt and is currently working on a 4th one. Did I mention she just turned 20 last October? Her love of film goes way back to her much younger years, when her classmates labeled her “the movie girl.” This interviewer would also call her “slow-down-and-stop-making-us-older-folk-look-lazy-girl.” Her three films, Pathogen (zombies), The Retelling (ghosts), and My Sucky Teen Romance (vampires,) cover her love of horror but also highlight her sharp wit. (“For reals,” follow that girl on Twitter and you will laugh often.)
Her new film, Grow Up, Tony Phillips, steps away from the horror and showcases her humor (which audiences started seeing more of in MSTR) in a coming-of-age story. I chatted with her back in September while she was premiering MSTR in NYC. She’s smart, funny, talented, charming, friendly…and 20. Remember where you were when you read this article in about five years when she accepts her first Oscar—especially because she’s promised to thank me, stated, and all of you lovely readers. It could happen."
I got introduced to this new liquor the other night. It's called Cabin Fever Maple Flavored Whisky. And you guessed it, it's whisky that has a maple syrup flavor! It's not too sweet and is really good on it's own especially on the rocks. Pretty good in a hot toddy or coffee as well. Go give it a shot and see what you think!
My friend Bex has her own wine line, BX of Napa. You should check it out! She only has 4 wines out as she is the lone winemaker. Chardonnay, Ruby Cabernet, Syrah and her new sparkling wine. Delicious wines from a woman her knows her vines! Go buy some now. And then send some to me.
Spartacus: War of the Damned starts up tonight on STARZ. It's the final season for the bloody historical drama. This is one of my favorite shows around. From the beginning, it has been an over the top showcase of bloody violence, stylistic sex scenes and just plain fun. Though when I interviewed creator Stephen S. Deknight a couple of years ago, he said his "ceiling is higher than most" when asked about the show being over the top. Thanks to STARZ for sending the first 2 episodes for review. I'm going to review on my podcast COMIC NEWS INSIDER as well next week.
Many new characters are introduced as a lot were killed off last season. Especially missed will be one of my favorites, Mira, as played by the awesome Katrina Law. Crassus is the new antagonist. A wealthy Roman who has legions to fight Spartacus and his growing army of slave rebels. While the now dead characters will be missed, these new ones are immediately intriguing and interesting.
The TV series has always loosely based itself upon the actual history of Spartacus. While some of the moments are true, many are embellished and artistic license is taken quite far. None of this deters from the story, of course. Let's be honest, whom of you knows the true history of Spartacus? I thought not! Hey, that's what Wikipedia is for. This is for entertainment! And entertain it does!
This season starts off with Crassus gathering his legions to hunt down Spartacus. And Spartacus continuing his vengeance against the Romans. More of the super bloody battles. The fight choreography is really great with some very cool swordplay and even a gruesome and unique beheading of sorts. How is it unique? Tune in to find out! I called the first season, subtitled "Blood and Sand", Blood and Boobs as we see lots of both. The final season continues this tradition! Plus, DeKnight has created a very special dialogue as well that you will recognize. Nothing Shakespearean but it fits and you'll soon find yourself speaking "Spartacusian".
Take remote control and watch Spartacus. The gods will smile upon you. Gratitude.
Last night, G4TV aired the final episodes of Attack of the Show (AOTS) and X-Play. I watched both of those shows going back to when they were on the now defunct TechTV. Well, AOTS was called The Screensavers then but X-Play was still X-Play. When G4 bought them out and gobbled up their shows, they eventually cut the entire TechTV lineup save those 2 shows. And then The Screensavers was renamed and rebranded as Attack of the Show. Over the years, I have gotten to know several people who worked at G4 and met many/interviewed others due to the podcast I host called COMIC NEWS INSIDER.
Blair Butler and I
Back in 2006, I reached out to Blair Butler (G4's comic book afficianado, writer on X-Play/AOTS, talent, etc) via her website about an interview and she replied. We set up an interview at San Diego Comic Con that year and it was the start of a beautiful friendnerdship. She agreed to come on the show at any time and true to her word, she did. We started having her on a semi-regular basis over that year and the next. And then, AOTS and X-Play just started getting more popular which made Blair even busier. To her credit, she always gave us love. Be it mentioning the podcast live on air on AOTS or wearing one of our t-shirts when doing her "Fresh Ink" segment. And through her, I was able to reach out to other talent on the channel and got to interview Kevin Pereira a few times, Olivia Munn and Candace Bailey. Many thanks to G4's publicists (Kristina Levsky and the awesome Kelly Susco) over the years for helping to set all of those interviews up. Blair continued to come on the podcast via phoner and especially at conventions even though her schedule got so busy. Thanks for everything, Blair! You rock!
Me and Olivia Munn
About a year or 2 ago, my good pal Grace Helbig was hired as a correspondent for AOTS. One night of drinking during New York Comic Con, she introduced me to Blair Herter (host/producer of X-Play) and we hit it off like a house on fire. You can hear a few of our very debaucherous chats on the podcast over the past couple of years. Love that dude. Through Blair H., I finally met AOTS long time correspondent Alison Haislip as well as his lovely bride and G4 correspondent Jessica Chobot. I also visited the AOTS set a couple of times post-SDCC and got to watch the show live. Meeting many more of the talent (Sara Underwood, Chris Gore, etc) and behind the scenes folks.
Blair Herter and I
Many people had mixed feelings on AOTS but I enjoyed it, even with many of the changes. It was a nerdy pop culture show that filled a void in TV. Sure, it missed the mark on more than one occasion, but it brought lots of great content and comedy. It launched the career of Olivia Munn and I still don't know why Pereira hasn't been scooped up for something major. Super talent, that guy. As for X-Play, it was a consistent video game review show that also had some really great comedy skits going all the way back to the early days. The 2 hosts from TechTV, Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb, made the transition to G4 and made it the most successful video game review show out there. Adam left a couple of years back and Herter, whom had been doing correspondence for them, took over as permanent co-host to Webb. Mad props to Webb. I think she was the only on air talent that lasted from the TechTV days.
Candace Bailey, me and Kevin Pereira
As for the series finales that aired last night, it was bittersweet. Both revisited old shows, segments and hosts. But I have to give mad props to the folks at AOTS for giving a GREAT Newhart-esque ending. Original hosts of The Screensavers from the TechTV days, Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton, were featured in a skit at the end. If you don't know, they are both doing just fine. Leo rules over his TWIT empire and Patrick continues to host tech shows. Kudos to whomever thought of the idea to bring them back and for the guys for agreeing to participate! Nice nostalgic moment. Here's a not so great YouTube vid of the ending but you get the idea.
G4TV is rebranding into the Esquire Channel and will appeal to a more mature crowd. (Whatever that means). It's reported that they will still cover gaming but other shows will focus on men's lifestyle including cooking, travel and fashion. Sigh. (I'll stay open minded though). Say what you will about AOTS and X-Play, but they were the 2 rare shows who did cater to the nerd niche and will be sorely missed. Good luck to all involved!

Father Knows Best. As a kid, I remember when TBS aired this show in the afternoons along with some other sitcoms from the 50’s like Leave It To Beaver. My moms was a big fan of it when she was a kid so we started watching it and I really dug it. Oh 50’s family life! So innocent and charming. If only we still dressed up just to sit around the house with each other.
I have some of the series on DVD and was thrilled to see this new Antenna channel (that seems to have appeared on cable) is showing it now. The channel is also showing several other great shows from that era. If you haven’t ever seen the show and want a little 50’s era nostalgia, check it out.
