Oscar Highlights

You knew it was coming and I do it because you care. Don't you? DON'T YOU?! Anyway, here ya go kids. 

• DVRed the show as I was working. Caught Kristin Chenoweth interviewing on red carpet. You know I love her (not just because I've met her and interviewed her several times but yeah, there's that) but just wanted to reiterate...I LOVE HER. As for the red carpet itself, just stop with the "What are you wearing" bullshit. The average viewer can't afford to go buy a Valentino dress or Tom Ford suit. 
• Seth MacFarlane as host. I think he rocked it. Sure, he didn't kill at every joke but he held it together and was quite funny. Some say he was offensive. Please. He was barely offensive, if at all. I think people get offended for OTHER people when they themselves really don't care. The opening was really fun. A bit long, but still fun. Shatner coming in as Captain Kirk "via the future", the "Boobs song", Charlize and Channing dancing (who knew she was so graceful?), the Flight sock puppets, and the Flying Nun bit. Just fun. 
• Christoph Waltz continues to owe Tarantino his success (well deserved too) as he picks up his 2nd Best Supporting Actor award. Love this dude. 
• Best Animated Short goes to Paperman! The beautiful cartoon that took over the internet when Disney released it online one day. Best Animated Feature to the only one I saw this year (I'm a bad nerd) goes to Brave. Happy on both accounts since I actually saw them both. 
• AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!! 
• Oh look! The main henchman from the first Die Hard film won Best Cinematographer! 
• Cool Bond tribute. 
• Catherine Zeta Jones back singing Chicago! I'll take it! 
• Ooh, good thing they let CZJ go first because Jennifer Hudson just rocked the roof off with her number from Dream Girls. 
• The entire Les Miserables movie cast gets up to sing! Cool. Well, yeah...there's Crowe too. Sigh.
• In the biggest shocker of the night, Anne Hathaway wins Best Supporting Actress! Yes, we all saw it coming but I'm glad to see her take it home. She was amazing in the film. 
• I was fast forwarding quite a bit but just noticed the orchestra playing the theme to Jaws when lesser known category winners went on too long. Cute. 
• Adele rocks Skyfall and deservedly wins for Best Song. That woman is just in another stratosphere with her awesome voice. 
• I liked how MacFarlane called out the audience on their occasional lame reaction to "offensive" jokes. Like when he did the Mel Gibson one and they groaned so he said something like, "Oh you're on his side?" And the weird audience disapproval to his John Wilkes Booth/Lincoln joke. He got them back with "150 years later and it's still too soon?" Well played, sir. 
• Salma Hayek. Mmmmmmmmm...
• I know they have seat fillers for the main floor but they shouldn't have let the camera sweep to the upper decks on the way back from commercial. LOTS of empty seats. Whole rows, in fact. I COULD HAVE SAT THERE!
• I realize there are a lot of jokes of Renee Zellweger's face looking like she sucked on many lemons but I think she looks like she's turning into a giant lemon. 
• Ang Lee wins Best Director and looks skyward to thank the "movie god". Ha!
• Jennifer Lawrence wins Best Actress. Just love that gal. She recovered from her fall on the way up to the stage easily by addressing it right away. Anyone else notice who first came to her rescue? Fucking Wolverine! Such a gent, Hugh Jackman! J. Law seemed genuinely shocked even though she was a heavy favorite. 
• What the shit was up with Joaquin Phoenix when they flashed to him upon announcing his nomination for Best Actor? He was chewing on something and looking down while shaking his head. We get it. You're anti-Hollywood! 
• Daniel Day Lewis delivers some great jokes at the top of his acceptance speech for his record breaking 3rd Best Oscar win. He always comes across so gracious, humble and lovely. Definitely someone I'd love to have a drink with and chat. 
• Surprise appearance from the First Lady! Pretty cool no matter what you believe politically. And please don't make it political, ya mooks. 
• Argo wins best pic and Affleck delivers one of the fastest speeches in history. Glad to see all of his success. Always dug him going back to the Kevin Smith days. 
• And then my fucking DVR cut out the rest (before Affleck finished). I know there wasn't much left but still annoying. 

For the record, I hardly saw anything last year. There was a time when I saw almost every movie as I went to the pictures about 3 times a week or saw 2-3 in one day. But now, what with the internet and DVR and strip clubs and porn...time is not as free as it used to be for me. Maybe this year I'll see more.

To Mourn or Not to Mourn

I'm sure many of you missed it yesterday when I posted about how I found out that my Dad died. Just as I'm sure many of you will miss this post. That's social media for you. And I certainly don't expect people to know all about my life just from online status. That being said, perhaps writing this out will be cathartic.

I appreciate those who did reach out but totally understand if you didn't. What can you say? And as I hinted at in the initial post, I was never very close to my Dad except during childhood so not sure how I feel about it. Clearly some people only saw the part about "Dad died" and not about the indifference over it all. Which I get. It's just that I feel odd getting any sympathy over someone I'm not sure I'm even grieving over. I do appreciate the good intentions and general showing me love, of course. 

A brief history.

My parents got divorced when I was 4 and Mom moved us away from Virginia to Florida. Dad would come down once a year to visit and called on birthdays and holidays. I remember being very upset that we didn't get to see him more. I never quite understood why he didn't visit more. I'm sure there was more to it than that, but as a little kid, you don't get it. He came down for my high school graduation and then moved back to The Phillipines. I didn't see him again until almost 9 years later when I moved to NYC. My Aunt, his sister, lives in New Jersey and he was coming to visit. I met his new wife and found out I had a little brother whom I also met. (He was 5 at the time). This is also the time I found out I had a sister but no one knew where she was located. (That's another story you can dig up online if you really have the time). I didn't see him again for another 4-5 years when he came back to visit one last time. Mind you, he wasn't visiting me, he was "settling affairs" and what not. I just happened to live close to my Aunt where he was staying. We never stayed in touch when he left after my graduation. I may have written once or twice and that was it. After his first visit, we didn't contact one another either. And on his last, that was it. My sister has had no contact with him as she didn't even know he was her father until I found her in 2000.  

As you can read, we were not close at all. I've never been a believer in the "blood is thicker than water" thing. So please don't come at me with that. I've often said that as I'm not close to my older brother either and have had people say, "Hey, it's your brother. It's family, etc." Sorry, but I have friends whom are more like brothers and sisters. Just as I've had various father figures throughout my life but just not my own father. I'm not trying to come across hateful but you can't fault me for having a little resentment. And if you do, then we probably aren't friends. Someone said yesterday about how they, as a parent, could never understand a person losing touch with their children or not wanting to see them. I agree wholeheartedly. While not a parent myself, I just think it's deplorable. 

Our little brother (the aforementioned former 5 year old) grew up with Dad and was very close. He's about 20 now and found us on social media a couple of years ago. Yesterday around 6pm, he instant messaged me simply saying, "Hey, just wanted to let you know that Dad died."

I sort of just froze for a minute. I felt...well, not much. As you read, he wasn't in my life much at all. I know it probably sounds terrible to many of you that I am so indifferent about it. And I actually feel bad that I don't feel worse. Maybe it'll hit me some other time. Of course, I feel terrible for my little brother (even though we don't know each other well) as Dad was a big part of his life. And I don't want this to take anything away from him feeling how he feels. But I hope he and others understand why I feel the way I do. Yes, I'm a bit sad, I suppose. I don't even have any pictures of him that I can find. I have a few fond and funny memories. But just not very many. 

Suppose I should leave on a fond/funny memory. When I was a teen, Dad came down and drove my older brother up from Florida to NYC to visit our Aunt. Our Canadian cousins came down as well. It was my first visit to NYC and was a really fun time. I had never met my cousins and we all got along swimmingly. We saw Cats on Broadway too! The funny moment was in the car one night. There was a song that was popular on the radio at the time. One of those annoying rap spoofs called "Rappin' Duke" that we all loved. If you're not familiar, then click the link. It was basically some dude doing a horrible John Wayne impression while rapping. The chorus went like this, "Da ha, da ha. Da ha ha ha ha ha." And I remember the song came on and I'm guessing Dad heard it before and he started singing the chorus. He has a terribly thick accent as he's from the Phillipines and it was the funniest thing I had ever heard. 

Rest in peace Marcial Roxas Aquino. You were my Dad and helped bring me in to this world. Hopefully that means something.

Grammy Highlights

I got home and decided to watch the Grammys first. Well, fast forward through most of it. Here are my highlights because you care. You're welcome. 

• Taylor Swift singing to a room full of her potential ex-boyfriends to open the show. All the women in the audience pretend to sing along but are secretly thinking, "That slut better not touch my man". 
• Can't wait to get to the part where Chris Brown wins "Worst Human Being/Biggest Asshole of the Year" 5th year running. 
• Did that commercial about testicular cancer checkups really have the guy say, "This Valentine's Day, instead of giving your girl the gift of diamonds, give her the family jewels." Ooh, racy CBS!
• Wow...Adele won first Grammy and on her way up, she hugged Rihanna and yup...there's Chris Brown sitting next to her. In the front row. Way to go Grammys! 
• John Mayer presenting. All the men in the audience are secretly thinking, "That slut better not touch my girl". 
• Don't listen to much Country, but goddamn that Carrie Underwood has got some pipes. And super hillbilly hotness. 
• Damn. Mumford sure has a lot of sons. 
• JT and Hova. Fuck yeah. 
• YES! Frank Ocean beats out that one previously mentioned asshat in the same category. Guess who really won that parking lot fight? 
• Kelly Clarkson, besides having a ridiculously awesome voice, is really funny! 
• LOLed at Jay-Z's swap meet joke. 
• Damn, Kat! Your Dennings look awesome. 
• Holy Shit! Sting w/ Bruno Mars! Nice. Then joined by Ziggy and Rihanna in a Bob Marley tribute. Best performance of the evening. 
• Really cool watching the camera pan to other artists as they sing along to whomever is on stage performing. 
• Is it me or does Jack White always look like a character that Tim Burton came up with? 
• Damn, Katy! Your Perrys look awesome. 
• What's a Hunter Hayes?
• The song that wouldn't go away won Record of the Year. Well done, Gotye. I liked to call that song the White Man's "Whoomp There It Is". 
• Awww, MCA. 
• Nice tribute with Elton John, Mavis Staples and others. It was like sitting in on a jam session. 
• CHUCK D!!!
• LL Cool J is STILL hard as hell. #RockTheBells

Doctor Who Love

Earlier tonight, I was talking Doctor Who with my friend Alexis and we both started to get misty eyed when we reminisced about Tennant's departure and the episodes that led up to it.
