It’s the COMIC NEWS INSIDER 500th episode live recording! Who knew we’d get this far after starting back in April 2005? Join host Jimmy Aquino and his rotating chair of co-hosts as they welcome a few guests to nerd out about comic books, animation, sci-fi and pop culture. There’ll be fun, funny and maybe a song or two!

New York City Opera to Shut Down

Came across this article about the NYCO possibly shutting down. Why am I interested in this, you ask? Oh, you don't ask? Well, I'm going to tell you anyway!

This is a shame. My very first NYC professional acting job was on stage with New York City Opera at Lincoln Center in Turandot and Mathis der Maler. I moved to NYC in 1994 and was just learning the ropes in the acting game (back when I was still acting) and not really auditioning. Finally, I started auditioning. And my first gig was with the NYCO! No, I’m not an opera singer. They needed stage combat fighters for a couple of operas. It wasn’t great pay but it was a chance to be on stage at Lincoln Center performing and work in the world of opera. Which, if you didn’t know, I actually love. (Puccini’s Turandot is my favorite). 

From what I remember, NYCO was a great stepping stone for the future stars of opera. Many of them went on to perform at The Met and so many other major venues around the world. They didn’t have the money that their Lincoln Center neighbor The Met had, but they put on fantastic productions. And I was lucky enough to be a part of 2 of them. 

Always a shame to see a great cultural institution have to throw in the towel due to finances. Though highly unlikely, here’s hoping they get an 11th hour save by Monday. Good luck!

Jeffrey Wright: Mad Acting Skillz

Jeffrey Wright is killing it on Boardwalk Empire. That man can just flat out act. I had the privilege of seeing him on Broadway in the Pulitzer Prize winning play Topdog/Underdog. I could watch this guy read the phone book. 

Call the Midwife

I have been wanting to watch Call the Midwife for awhile. I am an Anglophile and do love period pieces! Thanks to Netflix, I was able to watch all of the released episodes over the span of a week. (Not too many...about 15 with a Christmas special coming up this year and the next series starting next year). If you're not familiar, it's about a group of midwives, the nuns they live with and the people in their lives including the expectant mothers they deal with each episode. I forewarn, it gets pretty graphic with some of the medical moments but not too bad. Just fantastic storytelling and I'm not sure which midwife I love the most. Star Jessica Raine as Nurse Jenny Lee is tops as is Helen George as Nurse Trixie. I can now properly use the Animaniacs call.

 

And my absolute love Miranda Hart is also in the cast as a midwife. I love her sitcom and any roles she's played. It's great to see her in a dramatic role and she still instills a bit of humor to the show. Such a well rounded cast. All based on the true memoirs of Jennifer Worth (whom Jessica Raine's character represents). Really great actresses in this heavily female led cast. Nice to see that! Do yourself a favor and check it out. Just don't have a meal while watching during some of the birthing scenes.

iPhone Update!

Time to do the ol' Apple update. This time to the new ios7. Ooooh, pretty colors! It looks like a Windows phone now. A bit confusing at first and I got really frustrated trying to figure out where to put podcasts now that they were taken out of "music". (You have to download the "Podcasts" app and they all go there seemlessly). I'm sure I'll be used to it in a week. Onward and upward!
